2005 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 8: Pruning Demos & Rose Care Advice
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm
January 9: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians will present a Rose Care Seminar. Kitty Belendez, Bob Belendez, Karen Gubert, and Steve Jones, will give their annual pruning seminar, and they will discuss planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend.
February 13: Meeting / Curtis Thomsen on "Smart Gardening Seminar
This "Smart Gardening Workshop" is presented by Curtis Thomsen of Thomsen Environmental Consultants. Includes backyard composting, worm culture, grass recycling, native plant species, water-wise and fire-wise gardening. This special event workshop is sponsored by the County of Los Angeles. Compost bins and worm culture bins will be on sale at greatly-reduced prices (up to 75%). The public is invited to attend.
March 13: Meeting / Bob Martin on "What's New in Roses"
Consulting Rosarian Bob Martin will give us a PowerPoint presentation on what's new in the rose world. He will introduce the newest roses, including the 2005 All-America Rose Selections and his own choices of the most interesting new hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, miniatures, mini-floras and shrubs, plus some unusual older roses. It concludes with some interesting thoughts and pictures about the possible future of roses. A handout will be provided listing sources of those available.
April 10: Meeting / Jim Delahanty on "The Romance of Polyanthas"
Jim Delahanty , who grows a hundred different polyanthas in his Sherman Oaks garden, presents 'The Romance of Polyanthas,' a survey of the rise and fall of the polyantha class of roses from 1875 to the present. Included are examples of the various 'families' of polyantathas, notably the poly-teas (tea rose crosses), the influence of Baby Red Rambler and Orleans, the sporting Koster clan, and , finally, 'The Fairy' and its progeny. Because he is a technodolt, he brings the flowers themselves rather than slides and gives away the cuttings to those who want them.
April 24: Rose Garden Tours
May 1: Rose Auction & "Luau" Potluck Party
More than 100 potted rose plants will be on auction. At the home of Karen T.S. Gubert. After the auction, we will have a Hawaiian luau with all sorts of delicious foods prepared by our members. (Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Mother's Day is on the second Sunday of the month.)
June 12: Meeting / Rose Exhibiting Workshop
This will be a hands-on workshop. Bring your roses and our top exhibitors will show you how you can win ribbons and trophies at the upcoming fall rose show.
July 10: Rose Show Planning Meeting
Location to be announced.
September 11: Meeting / Jeri & Clay Jennings on "Teas and Chinas"
Clay and Jeri will give a delightful presentation all about the antique Tea and China roses. The meeting this month will be held at the Castaic Union School District, 28131 Livingston Avenue, Valencia, CA 91355.
October 8: Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society 12th Anniversary Rose Show

October 9: Meeting / Kim Rupert on "Unusual Roses"
Kim is a true rose connoisseur and he is known for growing some very unusual ones. Come hear about roses that you most likely have never seen before.
November 13: Meeting / Tom Carruth on "New Rose Introductions"
Tom Carruth is the Chief hybridizer at Weeks Roses. Some of his well-known roses include Marilyn Monroe, Moonstone, Betty Boop, and Outta the Blue. Tom will give us a sneak preview of the new rose introductions for 2006 and beyond.
December 11: Annual Holiday Party & Installation of Officers
Our annual Holiday Party will be held at the home of Steve & Sue Jones in Valencia at 4:30 p.m. It is a potluck event so attendees are asked to bring a dish of food. Great food, lots of fun, and some door prizes, too. Complete details will be in the November issue of "Rose Ecstasy."
