2006 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.

January 7: Pruning Demos & Rose Care Advice
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm

January 8:  Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians will present a Rose Care Seminar. Kitty Belendez, Bob Belendez, Karen Gubert, and Steve Jones, will give their annual pruning seminar, and they will discuss planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend.

February 12:  Meeting / Steve Jones on "A Rosey Trip to France
Steve will show us slides of his recent trip to France and Switzerland of private and public rose gardens. Steve attended a World Federation of Rose Societies meeting of the Conservation Committee to help preserve rare roses and create historically important gardens. Come join us and get to see places many of us just dream about. His photos of Odile Masquelier's garden are not to be missed.

March 12:  Meeting / Don Knipp ("Mr. Fertilizer")  on Fertilizers, Soil Amendments & Insect Control
Don Knipp, "Mr. Fertilizer,"  brings us a presentation on various garden products such as fertilizers and soil amendments. His program is educational and entertaining. Don has been active with the California nursery industry for over 45 years. He is Past-President of the California Association of Nurserymen. Come to the meeting and learn how these products can help you grow better roses.

April 9:  Meeting / Tee Bower on "Mechanics and Containers in Flower Arranging"
 Tee Bower has been making rose arrangements since 1998 and has won many ribbons and trophies at various shows around Southern California. Her talk will be on the basic mechanics of rose arranging and the containers that we already have around the house. Both of these subjects are not covered in flower arranging books. She will also demonstrate a traditional line arrangement. 


Saturday, April 29th: Rose Days at Otto & Sons Nursery

Otto & Sons celebrates their 14th Annual "Rose Days" with terrific discounts on all of their potted roses. Located in Fillmore, CA, where 110,000 roses comprising 800 different varieties are happily in bloom in their cool coastal weather. Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society members will be there in full force at a special table to talk roses and enjoy the day.

Sunday, April 30th:  Rose Garden Tours, 10 am to 2 pm 
Our garden tour this year will be at the home of Bob and Kitty Belendez. They grow about 350 roses of all types, including hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, shrubs, and antique roses. Their garden is nicely landscaped and features a waterfall and tree roses in the back yard. The hybrid teas and floribundas are mostly in the front yard, while miniatures, antique roses, and English shrubs are in the back yard. Complete details will be published in the April issue of the "Rose Ecstasy" newsletter.

May 7:  Wild West Rose Auction & Western Potluck BBQ 
2:30 p.m. in the Gubert Rose Garden, Saugus CA
Put on your chaps and spurs, cowboys and cowgirls, because our Wild West Auction features more than 120 awesome rosebushes. The event is being held in the beautiful rose garden of Karen and George Gubert in Saugus. Ingrid Gonzalez will be our action-packed auctioneer. Bring a lasso so you can quickly rope in some mighty fine roses while munching away on appetizers, and quenching your thirst from the desert trail with cool wine and beer. Yippee-kai-yo-yippie-yay, after the auction we will have a Western Potluck BBQ with all sorts of delicious salads, desserts, and side dishes prepared by our members. Be sure to get your very own cowpoke bidding card when you arrive. Get along little doggies ... we'll see you there.  (Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Mother's Day is on the second Sunday of the month.)

June 11:  Meeting / Dan Bifano on "Garden Design"
Dan Bifano has designed and installed gardens for Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand and at several other estates in the Santa Barbara, California area. His gardens are likely more spacious than ones you or I tend  to, starting at about 500 roses, but his 28 years of professional garden design, preparation and plant selection is something all of us can learn from.

July 9:  Rose Show Planning Meeting  
At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez, Saugus.

September  10:  Meeting / Jim Sproul on Rose Breeding
Amateur rose breeder Jim Sproul, from Bakersfield, will demonstrate how he hybridizes roses, and will show us some of his newest seedlings. Don't miss this educational meeting!

October 8:  Meeting / Kitty Belendez on Rose Exhibiting
This year our October meeting occurs one week before our rose show. To take advantage of this special occurance, Kitty will show new exhibitors how to prepare their roses for our rose show. If you follow her guidance, you may be able to win some ribbons and trophies at our October 14 rose show. It's fun and easy. You can do it!

October 14: Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society 
13th Anniversary Rose Show "Rainbow of Roses"  
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 13th Annual Rose Show  on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at the Castaic Union School District in Valencia, CA. All rose growers are welcome to exhibit at our show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the society to exhibit and there are no entry fees; just bring your roses as the society will furnish the vases. There will be 68 prizes (crystal giftware) and more than 500 ribbons awarded. Five large Waterford crystal trophies are given to the top roses. Two novices will be eligible to win a crystal prize as well as a $25 gift certificate from Green Thumb Nursery. Entries are received from 7:00 am to 9:45 am on Saturday morning. Judging will be from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. The show will open to the public at 12:30 pm. Trophy winners will be presented their awards at 2:00 pm.

November 12:  Meeting / Baldo Villegas on "Creatures in Your Garden"
Baldo is an entomologist with the State of California and he certainly knows his bugs. He has prepared a new presentation especially for us including new photos of many insects we should become familiar with, especially the good guys for our rose gardens.

December 10:  Annual Holiday Party & 
Installation of Officers
At the home of Steve & Suzy Jones, Valencia. Great food, lots of fun, and some door prizes, too. Complete details will be in the November issue of "Rose Ecstasy."
