2008 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 12: Pruning Demos & Rose Care Advice at Green Thumb Nursery
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm
January 13: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians will present a Rose Care Seminar. Kitty Belendez and Bob Belendez, Steve Jones, and Karen T.S. Gubert will give their annual pruning seminar, and they will discuss planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend.
February 10: Meeting / Suzanne Horn on "David Austin & the Romance of English Roses"
Suzanne Horn, Consulting Rosarian from Glendale, grows about 450 roses of all types, 55 of which are English Roses. These are the most popular of the modern shrub roses, and were introduced to American gardens by famed British hybridizer, David Austin. Suzanne has fallen in love with these romantic, old-style roses, and has prepared an awesome PowerPoint presentation that includes hundreds of beautiful photos. Suzanne's talk will include the varied forms and growth habits, shade tolerance, growing tips, and their varied uses in the garden.
March 9: Meeting / Curtis Thomsen on "Smart Gardening Workshop"
This "Smart Gardening Workshop" is presented by Curtis Thomsen of Thomsen Environmental Consultants. Includes backyard composting, worm culture, grass recycling, native plant species, water-wise and fire-wise gardening. This special event workshop is sponsored by the County of Los Angeles. The public is invited to attend.
SPRING: Executive Board Meeting / Sunday, April 4, 1:00 p.m.
April 13: Meeting / Pat Moomey on "Drying Roses & Making Potpourri"
Pat's program will feature how to dry roses for preserving and making decorations, as well as how to make potpourri with rose petals and herbs. To learn how to make your own potpourri, dry some rose petals on paper towels for several days, then store them in an air-tight jar and bring them to the meeting to finish the potpourri. It will be a hands-on fragrant delight for all attendees.

April 27: Rose Garden Tours
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at two gardens. Open to the public, free of charge. No RSVP required.

May 4: Rose Auction & Beach Party
(Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Mother's Day is on the second Sunday of the month.)
BY INVITATION ONLY (Members & their friends and family)
"Beach party" theme, rose auction, and a BBQ spells fun, fun, fun. At the home of George & Karen T.S. Gubert. Details and rose list available in April. Sorry, this event is not open to the public. You must be invited and RSVP to attend as this is a potluck event. The society will furnish BBQ hamburgers & hotdogs, guests to bring choice of appetizer, side dish, salad, or dessert. RSVP to Kym Ponegalek (at the e-mail or phone number in the May newsletter). Members and their invited friends and family are eligible to attend. Members are encouraged to bring friends and family, and those who bring non-member guests will be given 3 raffle tickets good for any future meeting.

Minimum bid is $8.00 per plant. A Waterford Crystal "Thank You" bowl will be awarded to the highest bidder of the day. Ten plants will be set aside for a special Silent Auction.
June 8: Meeting / Barbara Schneider & Sue Diller on "Rose Arrangement Designs"
Barbara and Sue are from Ventura County. Both ladies are accomplished rose arrangers and have won many awards at rose shows. Barbara and Sue are horticultural rose judges and arrangement judges as well. They will demonstrate the basics of rose arranging in a fun and educational way.

September 14: Meeting / Gisele Schoniger on "Soil Secrets for Growing Fabulous Roses"
Gisele represents the Dr. Earth company and will discuss the many products they have available for roses, such as potting soils, fertilizers, and soil amendments. She will discuss trends in the industry, how to build the microbial life of your soil, what is mycorrhizal fungi and why is that so important to your rose garden. In her 27 years in the Garden Industry, Gisele has accumulated a wide range of experience and knowledge. She earned her degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. She is a featured speaker with Sharon Asakawa and John Bagnasco with the Garden Compass Radio Show as well as several other stations in the Northwest, and she just finished her first commercial on Gardner & Bloome to be aired on HGTV. Her workshops are upbeat, educational and entertaining. Each and every person that attends will receive a wealth of educational materials, some sample packets of products, and Kellogg's will also donate lots of goodies for our raffle.
October 11: Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society
15th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show at William S. Hart Park, Newhall
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 15th Annual Rose Show on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at William S. Hart Park. All rose growers are welcome to exhibit at our show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the society to exhibit and there are no entry fees; just bring your roses as the society will furnish the vases. There will be 68 prizes (crystal giftware) and more than 500 ribbons awarded. Five large Waterford crystal trophies are given to the top roses. Two novices will be eligible to win a crystal prize as well as a $25 gift certificate from Green Thumb Nursery. Entries are received from 7:00 am to 9:45 am on Saturday morning. Judging will be from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. The show will open to the public at 12:30 pm. Trophy winners will be presented their awards at 2:00 pm. While there, visit the William S. Hart Cowboy Museum, the Heritage Junction old train museum, turn-of-the-century-homesteads, and the Antique Rose Garden.
October 12: Meeting / Clay & Jeri Jennings on "Found Roses"
Clay and Jeri Jennings will give a very interesting presentation on how "Found Roses" are grown for study (as well as beauty) in the historic Old Sacramento City Cemetery.

November 9: Meeting / Meeting /Robert B. Martin, Jr. on "Horizon Roses"
Election of 2009 Officers. Our guest speaker this month is Robert B. Martin, Jr., who will discuss new roses on the horizon. His PowerPoint presentation will include many color photos of the hot new roses being introduced. Bob is a Master Rosarian, awarding-winning author, and rose exhibitor. Bob is editor of "Horizon Roses," and also the American Rose Society's "Rose Exhibitor's Forum" and has the inside track on the new roses coming on the scene. You won't want to miss this meeting. There will be door prizes, refreshments, and a rose plant raffle.
December 14 : Annual Holiday Party & Installation of Officers
At the home of Steve & Sue Jones. Complete details are in the November/December issue of "Rose Ecstasy." This event is for members and their guests only. (Not open to the public)
