2009 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 10: Pruning Demos & Rose Care Advice at Green Thumb Nursery
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm. SCVRS members who have paid their 2009 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.
January 11: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians Steve Jones, Bob Belendez, and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.
SCVRS members who have paid their 2009 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card.
January 18, 1:30 P.M.: Executive Board Meeting
The meeting will be held at the home of Walt & Judy Klement in Santa Paula. Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment.
February 8: Meeting / Dexter Friede of GrowMore on "Micro-Nutrients for Growing Roses"
Regular meeting with a special speaker from GrowMore, manufacturers of various fertilizers, micro-nutrients, and enhancements for roses. Delivery of advance prepaid orders of GrowMore product.
Delivery of GrowMore Products. Must be ordered and pre-paid a week before the meeting per e-mail sent to you from our Ways & Means Committee.
March 8: Meeting / The Greenwoods speaking on "The Tournament of Roses" Parade
Chris, Leah, and Liz will be presenting an overview of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. This pictorial program will include the multi-facets of float decoration from the beginning to the completed floral work of art.The Greenwood family has been involved with the parade via the float that is entered annually by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. Chris started working on the Odd Fellows float in 1963 and has been involved continuously since. He served as committee chairman for seven years, winning more trophies than any other chairman. Leah became involved through her Theta Rho Girls Club in 1965 -- she marched in the parade and co-drove the Odd Fellows Float twice. Liz was raised working on the float. She has ridden twice and as decoration crew chief. Long-time members of the Pacific Rose Society, all three are ARS consulting rosarians and Chris and Liz are accredited rose judges.

April 5: Meeting / Ingrid Gonzalez speaking on "Watering Systems and Trellises for Roses"
Ingrid is a Consulting Rosarian, our past-president, and is proprietor of Primavera Landscaping. She will give us lots of good information on landscaping our gardens.

April 26: SCVRS Rose Garden Tours
9:00 a.m. to 12:00: Garden of Joe & Stephanie Correnti, Valencia
12:00 to 3:00 p.m.: Tom & Jackie Cadman, Canyon Country
Open to the public, free of charge. No RSVP required.
May 3: Rose Auction & Potluck Italian Feast, 2:30 p.m.
(Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Mother's Day is on the
second Sunday of the month.)
ATTENDEES MUST RSVP and bring food to share at this potluck event. Not open to the general public, but members of any rose society are invited to attend.
At the home of George and Karen TS Gubert in Saugus. Suzanne Horn will be the auctioneer. Please give RSVP to our Hospitality Coordinator, Susan Savage, at jtsavage@dslextreme.com. Over 100 potted roses will be up for auction.
June 14: Meeting / Kitty & Bob Belendez on
"Rose Propagating Techniques"

The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society is hosting a Rose Propagating Seminar featuring Consulting Rosarian Bob Belendez and Master Rosarian Kitty Belendez. Kitty will give an overview of the various ways to propagate roses including propagating by seeds, cuttings, and budding. Then Kitty will demonstrate in detail how to take cuttings of rose stems and make them grow roots. Bob Belendez will demonstrate how to bud/graft roses onto rootstock.

At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez. Rose show Chairwoman Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the nitty gritty details for our annual rose show. All members are invited to attend.

September 13: Meeting / Steve & Susie Jones on "Roses Down Under"
Steve and Susie Jones will treat us to a wonderful slide show and discussion of their trip to the rose gardens of Australia, New Zealand, and then a side trip to Tahiti. Steve is a Master Rosarian and President of the American Rose Society. We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.
October 11: Meeting / Baldo "Bugman" Villegas on "Rose Pests of the Home Garden"
Baldo is Senior Research Scientist and Entomologist with the State of California, as well as a Master Rosarian, based in Sacramento, and he certainly knows his bugs. He will give us a PowerPoint presentation including photos of many insects we should become familiar with, especially the good guys for our rose gardens. We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.

November 8: Meeting / Tom Carruth speaking on "New Rose Introductions for 2010 and Beyond"
Tom Carruth is the Director of Research at Weeks Roses, a wholesale rose grower. Some of his well-known roses include Cinco de Mayo, Marilyn Monroe, Julia Child, Betty Boop, and the 2007 American Rose Society Members' Choice award winner, Hot Cocoa. Tom will give us a sneak preview of the new rose introductions for 2010 and beyond. Each year at the Weeks research greenhouses in California, they hand pollinate about 50,000 flowers to produce around 250,000 seeds. After a thorough 8 to 10 year evaluation period, culminating in the All-America Rose selections (AARS) trials, only about 3 or 4 varieties emerge from the group as truly superior and market-worthy.
We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.
