2020 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. 

We currently meet at the Historical Saugus Train Station located inside Hart Park, 24101 Newhall Ave., Newhall CA 91321.

January 5, 2020 (Sunday)
Executive Board Meeting (Planning & Budgeting)
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: Home of Kitty Belendez, President

Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment. We will discuss and approve our annual budget, calendar, rose show, garden tours, and other important matters.

​January 11, 2020 (Saturday): One-on-One Rose Care Consulting 
at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall
10 am to 2 pm

SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. SCVRS members who have paid their 2020 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.

ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DISCOUNT CARD
SCVRS members who have paid their 2020 annual dues will be given an Annual 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card, which will be available after January 11, 2020.

February 9, 2020: Meeting
1:30 pm at the Historical Saugus Train Station at Hart Park, Newhall
Speaker: Sue Diller & Barbara Schneider
Topic: "How to Make Floral Arrangements"

Barbara and Sue have been Horticultural and Arrangement judges for many years. They host an arrangement workshop at the Ventura Fairgrounds every year in February. They are also in charge of running the Horticultural Division of the Ventura Fair, such as potted plants, roses, and dahlias. Also there is a floating floral show that includes everything that isn’t a rose and dahlia. They also oversee the commercial garden displays like Otto & Sons, and family, clubs, children, and professionals.

They will demonstrate how to make arrangements and displays for the home and rose show. They will answer any questions attendees might have about the topic. 

Potted roses will be on our raffle table. We will also feature a "Silent Auction" of three special roses. Refreshments served to all that attend.

March 8, 2020:  Meeting
1:30 pm at the Historical Saugus Train Station at Hart Park, Newhall
Speaker: Laurie Mazzella-Bennett of Star Roses
Topic:  "New Rose Introduction"

Laurie well tell us about all the new roses that Star Roses have recently introduced. She will be giving us some bareroot roses for distribution to our PAID MEMBERS in attendance at our March meeting.

We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

1:30 pm at the Historical Saugus Train Station at Hart Park, Newhall
Speaker: Scott Klittich from Otto & Sons Nursery
Topic: "To Be Announced"

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

APRIL is Red Rose Month, which includes roses that are medium red, dark red, and red blend.

Speaker: Clay & Jeri Jenning
Topic:  "Old Roses: The Adventure of Preservation"

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

May is BLENDS Rose Month for our Little Rose Show. Bring any color rose that is either striped or blended (bi-color).

June 14, 2020:  Meeting
1:30 pm at the Historical Saugus Train Station at Hart Park, Newhall
Speaker: Burling Leong
Topic: "Breeding Roses"

Burling will discuss & demonstrate how she breeds roses, propagates roses from cuttings, and grafts new roses using the chip budding method. Ralph Moore was Burling’s mentor and she worked and trained with him for many years.

Burling Leong is the owner of Burlington Rose Nursery located in Visalia, California. The nursery is comprised of two acres, nestled among walnut, fruit and citrus trees. It is a retail and wholesale grower of roses, perennials and shrubs. Propagation is through cuttings and budding. Retail roses are grown and shipped in 5-inch bands or one gallon containers. Custom propagation and budding services are available. Visitors are welcome by appointment only! Please call or email to make arrangements for a visit. JUNE is Pink Rose Month for our "Little Rose Show" which includes roses that are light pink, medium pink, deep pink, and pink blend. 

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

July 12, 2020 (Sunday):  1:00 p.m. Board Meeting & Rose Show Planning Meeting
At the home of Kitty Belendez in Saugus. Rose Show Director Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the details for our annual rose show. We'll finalize the rose show schedule and any needed changes, review the trophies, volunteer assignment, trophy sponsors, and judges luncheon.
