2010 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 9: Rose Care Selection & Advice at Green Thumb Nursery
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm. SCVRS members who have paid their 2010 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.
January 10: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Our Consulting Rosarians Steve Jones, Bob Belendez, and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.
SCVRS members who have paid their 2010 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card.

February 14: Meeting / Speaker: Suzanne Horn "The Rapture of Miniature & Miniflora Roses"
The speaker for our February meeting is Suzanne Horn from Glendale, California. Suzanne is a member of Santa Clarita Rose Society, and the date of our meeting will coincide with Suzanne's 10-year anniversary in roses. She could think of no better way to celebrate it than by talking to like minded individuals about her first love in roses ~ the diminutive miniatures and mini-floras.

"Weird Rose Science"
Weird Rose Science is a program that examines the science of roses and rabbits from a different angle, from the ancient teachings of Euclid of Alexandria to the art of Leonardo da Vinci; from the mathematics of Fibonacci and the observations of Albertus Magnus to more recent developments in genetic research, hormones, and environmentally acceptable additions to the armamentarium of pest control measures.
Bob Martin is the President of San Diego Rose Society, and Executive Director of the American Rose Exhibitors Society, the co-editor of its quarterly publication Rose Exhibitors' Quarterly and editor of Horizon Roses. He is the author of the book "Showing Good Roses" and maintains a website of U. S. rose show results at www.roseshow.com. Bob is an ARS Master Consulting Rosarian, an Accredited Horticultural Judge and an Accredited Arrangements Judge.

April 11: Meeting / Speaker: Scott Klittich of Otto & Sons Nursery
Scott will be talking about how Otto & Sons grows the best Roses and how you can apply those techniques to your garden. Scott received his Bachelor's Degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He has worked at the family nursery Otto & Sons for over 25 years and is currently general manager. There they grow thousands of roses of all types on 22 acres.

May 2: Rose Auction & Mardi Gras Party, 2:30 p.m.
(Meeting moved to the first Sunday because Mother's Day is on the
second Sunday of the month.)

June 13: Meeting / Speaker: Burling Leong "Restoring the Rose Garden at Hearst Castle and Demonstration of Propagation Techniques"

Our special guest speaker this month is Burling Leong of Burlington Rose Nursery in Visalia, CA. Burling was Ralph Moore's assistant at Sequoia Nursery for many years. Burling's program will be on 'Restoring the Rose Garden at Hearst Castle'. She will have a PowerPoint slide show, showing how she uses the chip budding method to create 3-foot standards for Hearst Castle. She will show slides of the tree roses planted at the Castle along with photos of each of the roses. After the program Burling will do a live demostration on chip budding, and will also donate a few roses for our rose raffle.
We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.

July 11: Board Meeting & Rose Show Planning Meeting
At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez. Rose show Chairwoman Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the nitty gritty details for our annual rose show. All members are invited to attend.

September 12: Meeting / Speakers: Sue Diller & Barbara Schneider on "How to Make Rose Arrangements"
Barbara and Sue are from Ventura County. Both ladies are accomplished rose arrangers and have won many awards at rose shows. Barbara and Sue are horticultural rose judges and arrangement judges as well. They will demonstrate the basics of rose arranging in a fun and educational way.
We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.
October 10: Meeting / Speaker: Phil Rogers of Corona Clippers
Phil is Marketing Manager for Corona Clippers. He's going to show us some prototype tools that will be introduced in 2011. Phil will tell us all about the various high quality tools for the garden. He is donating some tools for our raffle table, so be sure to buy a ticket or sign in for a chance at a free door prize.

November 6: Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society
17th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show
Rose Show Schedule available in August.
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 17th Annual Rose Show themed "Wild West Roses" on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the William S. Hart Park (map), 24151 San Fernando Road, Newhall, CA 91321. The show was located in Hart Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Everyone is welcome to exhibit their home-grown roses at the show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Simply bring your roses in a bucket of water, and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags.
November 14: Meeting / Sandy Cudmore of Green Thumb Nursery
Companion plants for roses, and planting care. Her area of expertise is California natives, succulents and water wise plants.which she will talk about .
We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.

December 12 : Annual Holiday Party & Installation of Officers
At the home of Steve & Susie Jones, Valencia. SCVRS members and their guests only. 4:30 P.M. It's a potluck event.
