2015 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center (map), 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.  
          
January 4, 2015:  Executive Board Meeting
1:00 PM At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez
Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment. We will discuss and approve our annual calendar, rose show, garden tours, rose auction, and other important matters. 

January 11, 2015:  Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
2:30 to 4:30 PM
Located at the SCV Senior Center
22900 Market St., Newhall CA 

Our Master Rosarians Bob Belendez and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.

ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DISCOUNT CARD
SCVRS members who have paid their 2015 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card, which are available now.

January 17, 2015: One-on-One Rose Care Consulting 
at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm. SCVRS members who have paid their 2015 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.

February 8, 2015: Meeting
Speaker: Kitty Belendez, Master Rosarian
Topic: Pesticides & Garden Safety
2:30 to 4:30 PM

Due to illness of Phil Rogers, we had an alternate speaker. Master Rosarian Kitty Belendez spoke on "Pesticides & Garden Safety." Mr Rogers will instead speak on March 8.

March 8, 2015:  Meeting
Speaker: Phil Rogers of Corona Clipper
Topic:  How to Use & Care for Garden Tools
(Postponed from our February meeting)
2:30 to 4:30 pm

Phil will tell us how to use our garden tools, and how to care for them to make them last longer. He will also share the history of tools as well as tell us about the new tools available from Corona. Phil will also bring some Corona tools to put on our raffle table. Maybe YOU will be one of the lucky winners of a new Corona tool.

RARE & UNUSUAL ROSE DISCUSSION & AUCTION WITH POTLUCK BUFFET LUNCH

THEME: "English Rose Garden"

Auctioneer:  Bob Martin, Master Rosarian 

Location:  Rosedell Elementary School
in the Multi-purpose Room
27853 Urbandale Avenue, Saugus, CA 91350

Free parking around the corner on Rosedell Drive.
Enter the gate inside the Rosedell parking lot, then proceed to the multi-purpose room where the auction is being held.

DO NOT park in the lot on Urbandale Avenue because that school entrance gate will be locked.

11:00 am:  Set Up 
11:45 am:  Potluck Lunch
12:30 pm:  Auction
4:00 pm:    Payments & Clean Up
5:00 pm:    Exit the building

All attendees are asked to bring food to share in the potluck luncheon. All attendees MUST RSVP so that we can make sufficient arrangements for tables and chairs and other supplies and soft drinks.   

We do not accept credit cards, and cannot do shipping or deliveries. 

All payments must be made by either cash or check on the day of the event, and all plants must be removed from the facility by each winning bidder at the close of the event.

Proxy bidding is allowed, but the bidder must make their own proxy arrangements as we do not have staff available to handle that.

All proceeds benefit production of our annual educational rose show, educational monthly meetings and materials, and speaker fees.

No smoking or alcohol is allow at this facility.

APRIL is Red Rose Month, which includes roses that are medium red, dark red, and red blend.

We will also a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring their roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a door prize, and raffle.

Topic: "Landscaping with Roses During Drought"

May is BLENDS Rose Month for our Little Rose Show. Bring any color rose that is either striped or blended (bi-color) for a chance to win a crystal gift plus 5 FREE RAFFLE TICKETS.

Our raffle includes potted roses and Corona Tools.

Speaker: Suzanne Horn
Topic: David Austin & the Romance of English Roses
​Suzanne's program will coverthe history of David Austin Roses and what makes them truly romantic as well as the family lines of these roses, varied forms and growth habits, shade tolerance, fragrance, growing tips, and their varied uses in the garden. She will be bringing full-color catalogs for everyone that attends.

JUNE is Pink Rose Month, which includes roses that are light pink, medium pink, deep pink, and pink blend.

At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez in Saugus. Rose show Director Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the nitty gritty details for our annual rose show. We'll finalize the rose show schedule, review the trophies, and judges luncheon.

OCTOBER is Orange & Apricot Rose Month, which includes roses that are orange or apricot, or blends thereof.

November 1: Regular Meeting
(moved to 1st Sunday due to Rose Show)
Speaker: Bob & Kitty Belendez, Champion Rose Exhibitors
Topic: How to Win at Our Rose Show

Since the following week is our Annual Rose Show, this is a unique opportunity for newer rose exhibitors wanting to hone their skills from the more experienced exhibitors.

Bob and Kitty will show you how to cut, groom and prepare your roses, and what to expect at the rose show. They will show you how to transform a mediocre rose into a trophy winner by using the tools in their grooming kit. Bring several blooms, which they will help you groom to perfection.

We will also feature a Little Rose Show and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle table, and a free door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

It is White Rose Month, which includes roses that are white, near white, and white blend (according to ARS Handbook for Roses)

22nd Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show

Show opens to the public at 12:30 pm after judging completed.

The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 22nd Annual Rose Show themed "Wild West Roses" on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at the William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall, CA 91321. The show is located in Hart Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Everyone is welcome to exhibit their home-grown roses at the show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Simply bring your roses in a bucket of water by 9:00 am, and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags.
