2018 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center (map), 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California. 

PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR MEETING PLACE MIGHT BE RELOCATING AROUND MID-YEAR 2019 OR AS SOON AS THE NEW SENIOR CENTER IS COMPLETED.

​January 13, 2018 (Saturday): One-on-One Rose Care Consulting 
at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall
10 am to 2 pm

SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. SCVRS members who have paid their 2018 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.

January 14, 2018 (Sunday): FREE ROSE CARE SEMINAR
2:30 pm at the SCV Senior Center, Newhall
Speakers: Bob & Kitty Belendez, Master Rosarians
​Topic: "Pruning, Planting, Fertilizing, Mulching, Repotting"
Our Master Rosarians Bob Belendez and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.

ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DISCOUNT CARD
SCVRS members who have paid their 2018 annual dues will be given an Annual 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card, which will be available after January 13, 2018.

Executive Board Meeting (Planning & Budgeting)
Time:  1:00 PM
Location: Home of Teresa & Jerry Mathers

Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment. We will discuss and approve our annual budget, calendar, rose show, garden tours, and other important matters.

February 11, 2018: Meeting
2:30 pm at the Senior Center, Newhall
Speaker: Suzanne Horn
Topic: "Success With Roses in Containers"

Suzanne is a Master Rosarian, prolific writer on the topic of roses, and very successful rose exhibitor. She grows hundreds of roses in containers and will share her vast knowledge with us with her lovely PowerPoint presentation that features many color photos of her home-grown roses.

Potted roses will be on our raffle table. We will also feature a "Silent Auction" of three special roses. Refreshments served to all that attend.

March 11, 2018:  Meeting
2:30 pm at the SCV Senior Center, Newhall
Speaker: Mike Wronkowski from Green Thumb Nursery
Topic:  "Growing Blueberries"

Mike Wronkowski has been in the nursery industry since 1980. In 1985 Mike became a California Certified Nursery Professional. He currently serves on two boards: the California Association of Nursery and Garden Centers, of which he is the Southern Region Board of Director. He is also the California Certified Nursery Professional, Chairman of the Board. 

We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

​April 8, 2018: Meeting
2:30 pm at the Senior Center, Newhall

Speaker: John Windsor from Green Thumb Nursery
Topic: "Soil Nutrients"

​John Windsor has over 25 years experience in the field of Horticulture. He is a Certified Arborist, and an Advanced California Certified Nursery Professional.

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

APRIL is Red Rose Month, which includes roses that are medium red, dark red, and red blend.

Topic:  "All About Bees"

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

May is BLENDS Rose Month for our Little Rose Show. Bring any color rose that is either striped or blended (bi-color).

Speaker: Scott Klittich from Otto & Sons Nursery
Topic: "How to Care For Roses When it's Hot, Hot, Hot"

JUNE is Pink Rose Month for our "Little Rose Show" which includes roses that are light pink, medium pink, deep pink, and pink blend. Winner gets 5 FREE RAFFLE TICKETS.

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" at the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle (including potted roses), a silent auction, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.

July 8, 2018:  1:00 p.m. Board Meeting & Rose Show Planning Meeting
At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez in Saugus. Rose Show Director Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the details for our annual rose show. We'll finalize the rose show schedule and any needed changes, review the trophies, volunteer assignment, trophy sponsors, and judges luncheon.

24th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show 
Hart Hall, William S. Hart Park, Newhall

Show opens to the public at 12:30 pm after judging completed.

The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 25th Annual Rose Show themed "Wild West Roses" on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall, CA 91321. The show is located in Hart Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Everyone is welcome to exhibit their home-grown roses at the show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Simply bring your roses in a bucket of water by 9:00 am, and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags.

Topic: Breeding Roses at Burlington Rose Nursery
