2014 Meeting Dates & Special Events
2014 ROSE SOCIETY MEETING DATES
Unless otherwise noted, all regular "meeting" times are at 2:30 p.m. and located at the SCV Senior Center (map), 22900 Market Street, Newhall, California.
January 2014: Executive Board Meeting
TIME AND LOCATION TBD
Annual planning, budgeting, and audit committee appointment. We will discuss and approve our annual calendar, rose show, garden tours, rose auction, and other important matters.
January 11: One-on-One Rose Care Consulting
at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall
SCVRS Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to assist the public with Questions & Answers and assistance with bareroot rose selections. Located at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall, 10 am to 2 pm. SCVRS members who have paid their 2012 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card good at Green Thumb Nursery (Newhall) for the entire year, including purchases made this day.
January 12: Meeting / Annual Rose Care Seminar
Located at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St.,
Newhall CA
2:30 p.m. to 4:30 PM
Our Master Rosarians Bob Belendez and Kitty Belendez will present a Rose Care Seminar including pruning existing rose bushes and planting techniques for the new bareroot roses, as well as fertilizing and mulching. The public is invited to attend. Free of charge.
ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DISCOUNT CARD
SCVRS members who have paid their 2014 annual dues will be given a 10% discount card at the meeting, good at Green Thumb Nursery, Newhall store only. If you cannot attend this meeting, you will need to mail a SASE to Kitty Belendez to get your Green Thumb Discount Card, which are available now.
February 9: Meeting
Speaker: Tom Carruth
"What's Happening at the Huntington"
Tom has retired from Weeks Roses to take a new role in life as the E.L. & Ruth B. Shannon Curator of the Rose Collection at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. Tom is overseeing the renovation of the rose garden with an eye on refocusing the rose collection to equal the beauty of the many other spectacular gardens at the Huntington and will tell us all about it.
March 10: Meeting
Speaker: Dan Bifano
"Roses as a Garden Focal Point"
Dan Bifano is our featured speaker. His PowerPoint presentation is titled “Roses as a Garden Focal Point.” Dan has been designing gardens for over 25 years, including celebrity gardens. He is a Master Rosarian, and Rose Judge. Dan is the Curator of the A.C. Postel Memorial Garden in Santa Barbara and has been a member of the Santa Barbara Rose Society since 1978.

April 6, 2014, Sunday: ROSE AUCTION
OPEN TO MEMBERS & GUESTS ONLY
Theme: "Red, White, & Blue"
Auctioneer: Bob Martin
Located at Castaic School District
28131 Livingston Avenue, Valencia, CA 91355
Set-up: 10:30 a.m.
Silent Auction: 11:30 am to 12:45 pm
Potluck Lunch Begins: 12:00 Noon
Live Auction Begins: 1:00 p.m.
Clean-up: 4:00 p.m.

Potluck lunch begins at 12:00 noon. And the live auction begins promptly at 1:00 p.m.
This auction will NOT be open to the public, but any person that is a member of any rose society may attend. All attendees must bring food to share in the potluck luncheon. All attendees MUST RSVP so that we can make sufficient arrangements for tables and chairs and other supplies and soft drinks.
We do not accept credit cards, and cannot do shipping or deliveries.
All payments must be made by either cash or check on the day of the event, and all plants must be removed from the facility by each winning bidder at the close of the event.
Proxy bidding is allowed, but the bidder must make their own proxy arrangements as we do not have staff available to handle that.
No smoking or alcohol is allow at this facility.

"Kaleidoscope of Fabulous Floribundas"
Nothing compares with the massive, colorful blooms of the floribunda class of rose. Kitty & Bob grow 57 different floribundas, mostly planted in beds, some in containers.
JUNE is Pink Rose Month, which includes roses that are light pink, medium pink, deep pink, and pink blend.

We will feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a potted rose plant.

July 13: 1:30 p.m. Board Meeting & Rose Show Planning Meeting
At the home of Bob & Kitty Belendez in Saugus. Rose show Director Kitty will host this meeting to finalize all the nitty gritty details for our annual rose show. We'll finalize the rose show schedule, review the trophies, and judges luncheon.
July: Nominating Committee will meet in July
August: No meetings in August

"The Future of Roses"
A program on the future of roses, from the blue rose and the "Polka Dot" rose, through recent advances in rose science, and hybridizing.
SEPTEMBER is Yellow Rose Month, which includes roses that are light yellow, medium yellow, dark yellow, and yellow blend.

"History of Old Garden Roses"

OCTOBER is Orange & Apricot Rose Month, which includes roses that are orange or apricot, or blends thereof.

20th Anniversary "Wild West" Rose Show

The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 21st Annual Rose Show themed "Wild West Roses" on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall, CA 91321. The show was located in Hart Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Everyone is welcome to exhibit their home-grown roses at the show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Simply bring your roses in a bucket of water, and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags.
November 9: Meeting

"Composting, Vermiculture, and Sustainable Gardens During Drought"
We will also feature a "Little Rose Show" during the meeting, and members may bring roses in vases to share. We will also have refreshments, a raffle, and a door prize. Those who bring refreshments or roses to share will get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win any item on our raffle table.
It is White Rose Month, which includes roses that are white, near white, and white blend.
